The Kite Runner THE KITE RUNNER

I have to say this truly is one of the best books I have read. The story is a valuable lesson in friendships, family relationships and loyalty to the people in ones life. It reveals the heartfelt long term emotional consequences when wrong choices are made, the ways one can face ones fears, come to terms with the original sin and also forgive oneself. I believe is an excellent read for the teens and adults of our time.

The Kite Runner takes place in Afghanistan before the Taliban takeover. It is a story of 2 boys both being raised by their fathers without their mothers. Amir is a Pashtun from a well to do business family, Hassan is a Hazara servant, actually Amir's servant. The controversial chapter causing this book to be banned in some U.S. high schools is one of disgust and sadness, but it is also a reality that could make teens more aware, be on top of a dangerous situation and learn true loyalty.

Hassan is sexually abused by another boy while the abusing boys friends watch and worse yet, Amir his friend, watches too. This act haunts both of the boys for years. Amir's fear to stand up for his friend, turning his back on a bad situation is something Amir lives with for the rest of his life. Luckily, Amir has an older friend of his father's, Rahim Khan, who has known the truth for years and reaches out to Amir to finally free his tortured soul.

The story brings with it high emotions of love, joy, fear, tears, times of overwhelming hatred and always hope. I would encourage you to read this wonderful enlightening book and to share this book, "The Kite Runner", with your teen.
